My grandfather, Samuel Tober and his brother Charles came to the US in the late 1800's and settled in Wisconsin. Charles arrived first in June 1887 aboard the Polynesian. Sam arrived in March 1888 aboard the Marsala. There were supposedly other brothers, but to date have not be able to connect anyone to them. I suspect Emil and Johann, who arrived together in April 1896 may be the brothers but have no proof except that all 4 sailed from Hamburg and their last residence is listed as Bartaszewa. Parents of Samuel and Charles are listed on their marriage licenses as Johann Tober and Catherine Gertz/Gest/. There is a possibility that they were Jews, but have no proof only stories. I have been able to find 2 Bartszewas. One is located in Gmina Police and the other in Gmina Obrowo. (Another story says that Grandpa was from a small town about 25 miles from Warsaw) I would really like to find some more information about the family but so far this is it. Would love to "talk" to other Tober/Thober families to see whether there are any connections.
