My family name is Niemczura. My immediate family came to the US from Poland in the teens and twenties of the twentieth century. I've never met anyone with the name that I wasn't related to, and suspected for a long time that it was an Ellis Island name fix. However, I have met a couple native Polish speakers who have told me that they thought the name is an insulting reference to a German woman, explaining that Niemcz is from the root word for "german." Surface level research never shows "Niemczura" in any of the databases. My family assimilated very quickly and never looked back; I think I'm the only one interested in finding out where we came from or who we used to be. Anyone out there who can help?
