My grandfather and uncle immigrated from the Ukraine to Canada. My grandfather was Emil Semkowski and he arrived in Canada in 1928 aboard the Empress of France. My uncle was Wladyslaw Semkowski and he arrived in 1925 on the Canada. My uncle left behind a wife named Maria and 2 children who were to follow him but they chose to stay behind.
I recall my grandfather had two or three brothers, Joseph who was killed in a war and Stanand/or Jerry of which one relocated to France. They also had a sister named Tina who lived in Curtis Bay Maryland US.
From the Canadian Immigration Log, my grandfather was listed as being born in Dobropole Poland with a Ukrainian race. He and his brothers were in the Polish army. He was schooled and learned to read and write Polish but he said he spoke Ukainian but his accent was more Polish. We were taught to refer to him as JaJu.
