Although my family name is "Hill" I am pretty much all Polish on my father's side. My grandmother, who probably had more information about our heritage than anyone, refused to talk about it. (My grandfather died when I was only 1 year old) Grandma finally admitted a few things before she died: 1. Her father, John, came from somewhere around Suwalki, and he arrived around 1883. That family name was Dziedzikowski. After he had children, the name was changed to Doski, and ultimately Doskey. Supposedly, John's father (whose name was Piter ~ according to his death certificate) owned land that yielded lumber; he told John to take a load of lumber to the port, buy a ticket, and go to the USA, and John did that. According to my grandmother, he first settled in Lorain, Ohio, then moved to Berea, Ohio, where he owned a store and raised his family. 2. He married Pelagia (Pauline) Sweda (also Szweda) She actually was born in the USA, but her parents may have not been. Their names were Jakup Sweda(1834-1883) and Aniela Skorz (1844 - 1921). I have no idea when they arrived in America, or where they came from. They are buried in Berea, Ohio. 3. My paternal great grandparents, Marian (aka; Frank) and Frances (Franziska) Gorzynski emigrated around 1883, with an infant child named Honorata. Marian was supposedly born in Gorzno. On the ship's manifest for Franziska, it says she came from Lautenberg. They settled first in Nanticoke, PA, where Marian was a coal miner. They moved to Buffalo first, then Cleveland, Ohio. |
