My maternal grandmother and family emigrated from Suwalki Poland to Johnstown, Pa. Her father was Jan Silakowski. Jan (later an elder daughter, Anna) emigrated first, he used the surname Silak. Son Alex also used this name on WWI draft registration. On the tombstone of Jan, the last name is Silakowskiego. Jan was married to Julianna Slowikowski. (She had a brother named Stanislaus) The story goes that the customs fellow gave her the name Julianna... and she loved it. The only notation I have found is her arrival in Liverpool on her return trip after Jan died. |
