I have into two road blocks in researching my family.
First is my Mother's maiden name, Kovalewski. I can go back as far as her paternal grandfather, Stanley Kovalewski who came to the Pennsylvania, USA about 1913 and Married Ann Gudwelski who was born in NY, USA. I have his WWII draft registration card that clearly shows his birth place as Petcova, Poland. I also have several US census records that list birth place as West Prussia. I have checked current and old maps for Petcova but can not locate it. It is possible that it is a miss spelling. As the WWII registration card was signed using his "mark" and witnessed by his Army recruiter. This normally is evidence that the person is not able to read or write, and the recruiter may not have know how to spell the town correctly.
The other road block on My Mother's maternal side. I can trace the Kohanski's back to Frank J. Kohanski who was born in 1876 and came to the USA in about 1888 from Danzig. He married Rose Gajewski born about 1878 and came to the USA with her husband. Her father came with them as well, His name was Frederick Gajewski born about 1849. His birth place was listed as Germany, West Prussia. With the Kohanski line I joust ware I should start to look to find more information.
