Post subject: Rzeszow - Rzeszów in Podkarpackie area of Poland
There was a discussion on another thread about Ransen, Schlesien, Preußen, Germany being renamed Ręszów, Śląsk, Polska. The discussion touched on some confusion with Ręszów, Śląsk, Poland and Rzeszów, Poland.
With this thread, I would like to start a discussion about Rzeszów, Poland.
A description of the town on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rzesz%C3%B3w
Mike Burger has a nice collection of records from Rzeszow. Search for births, deaths and marriages: http://www.mikeburger.com/rzeszow.html
There is a nice discussion related to Rzeszow on another section of Polish Origins: http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?p=2819#2819
If you are researching your ancestors in this town, please post your comments here.
Below are surnames associated with Rzeszow that can be found on the Ellis Island website. No attempt has been made to correct names that appear misspelled on the Ellis Island site.

I have attached a photo taken in Rzeszow in 1930. My great-uncle Frank Ference (Ferenc) went back to Poland to visit family in 1930. I recently scanned some photos from his photo album and found this family image with Rzeszow inscribed at the top. This is one of the many clues that I am following to find my family in Poland and Ukraine. My Ferenc family lived in Drohobycz, but I don't know how they are connected with Rzeszow.
Unfortunately there is no identifying info with the photos. I'm also including an image of the soldier who is in the back row. The woman next to him in the group shot is wearing the same coat/dress, but with a fur collar. If anyone can identify the uniform and rank, please post a reply.
I hope that the discussion about Rzeszow will continue - I'm interested in learning more abou this town/village. Has anyone looked at church records from Rzeszow?
Update March 21, 2019: I receive an important clue about the soldier in these photos from a nice member who took an interest in the uniform on another thread: https://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?p=41682#41682. He informed me that the soldier belonged to the 22nd regiment of field artillery of the 22nd division of mountain infantry. In December of 1931 the unit changed the name on the 22nd regiment of light artillery. In an unbelievable stroke of luck, a composite photo exists and my mystery soldier's photo is part of it! I now know that his name is W. Struś. Please message me if you have any family named W. Struś in the Rzeszow area.

Shellie,
Maybe this is a little bit off-topic but since 2002 mayor of Rzeszow is Tadeusz Ferenc. He was elected for his third term of office just a few weeks ago. More about Tadeusz Ferenc in wikipedia in Polish: http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tadeusz_Ferenc and translated by google translate: http://bit.ly/hJKuUR .

Hi Zenon! I found this info about Tadeusz Ferenc just last week. I sent him an email, but of course, he is probably too busy to reply. If anyone reads this posting and knows of any Ferenc people in Rzeszow, please contact me. Thank You!

Shellie,
I had been researching Soldier's Uniforms and recall that the uniform with what I refer to as "The RickRack" look on the collar is from the Polish Army-sorry I don't recall the year, but I think it was after 1900.
In regards to the "Rzeszow" labeled photo. 1.) Your Uncle may have visited his parents home or a sibling's home or also consider a Godparent's home or even Grandparents or Aunt & Uncle's home in Rzeszow 2.) Or perhaps he was visitng his spouses family home. Please note that his spouse had her arm around one of the boys in this photo. Perhaps he was a favorite younger brother or nephew of hers?
I think you are quite an experienced researcher-but sometimes with all the details we have to deal with, it bares a reminder of the possibilities, so please do not feel insulted that I have stated what seems to be the obvious possibilities!
In regards to the Plaid Dress. It appears New & fresh in the photo of the lady, soldier & child, so I think this lady is the original owner of the dress. Perhaps this lady loaned the dress to the lady in the group photo or had given it to her as a hand-me-down gift. I don't know if you noticed or not, but there appears to be the head of a baby who is seated on the ground in front of the woman in the front row in the group photo.
I thank you for posting these photos, as I never tire of seeing them, and hope that others will also post more photos. I have been studying photos for the past year and find them to be a valuable resource when compared with the photos of my other relatives and even with other researchers of the same surnames. I have come up with some very interesting similarities between them, which indicates to me that even though we have not discovered any acutal documentation to connect our families, the proof is in the photos that we DO actually have a connection and need to keep up our pursuit of research to find it.
Also, Thanks for posting all those names associated with Rzeszow-Buczek is one of the surnames I am researching.
My Best,
MaryAnne

Hi MaryAnne,
I'm not insulted at all and welcome your comments. You are so right about being so close to a project and missing details - that's what I love about this forum - it gives us the chance to learn from others and benefit from their point of view. I have a some additional photos that I think I'll post, of that same group of people.
Your comment about the uniform just gave me an idea to examine more closely the collar and see if the rank is the same on both photos. I'm pretty sure that the soldier is the same man in both photos. It's much harder for me to say whether the lady in the plaid dress is the same as the one in the studio portrait - your comments suggest that you think they are not the same lady. The lady in the studio portrait certainly looks more elegant, doesn't she? I'm like you - I LOVE pouring over old photos, especially old family photos that I have scanned and can enlarge to examine details. I love it when I zoom in on something in the background that was captured in the photo, but no one ever noticed it because it was too small in the snapshot. That's why Shorpy.com is one of my favorite websites. I am glad that you found my list of surnames helpful. Please let me know if your research in Rzeszow progresses to looking at microfilm of church records. I'd like to know if my Ference family name shows up in those records. I plan to look through them myself someday, but I'm currently looking at films for another part of my family.
Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed comments!

Shellie,
Thanks for the referral to Shorpy.com--I will check it out very soon.
You may be interested in www.stareatelier.pl which is a website that contains photos specifically from Poland. I found it helpful in identifying some time periods through comparison. Months ago, I sent an email to the guy with photos to see if he could help me identify time periods, but he has not replied, but that is OK, I still appreciated viewing his whole website.
I notice your portrait Soldier is wearing a few medals-Have you tried http://www.virtuti.com to try to identify them?
I look forward to seeing additional photos of yours.
With your original photos and your capability to enlarge details- it may be interesting to check out the 3 caps being worn in the group shot.
I'm not convinced that the soldiers in each photo are the same guy, besides the fact that the uniforms are different, I'm just not sure. They could be brothers?
I think the ladies wearing the one Plaid dress are definately different and stick to my opinion that the lady in the portrait gifted or leant the plaid dress to the lady in the group shot. The lady in the group shot is much larger than the lady in the portrait and the jacket does not meet in the front. Yet the little girl in each photo appears to be the same with a full head of short hair and wearing a little white dress, without the sweater in one of the photos, so it's the same time frame? I wonder who the guy in the light suit & hat is? Is he with the woman in light outfit & hat or did someone lend him this suit-I think not as it seems to fit him well.
I keep a 5 x 7 index card by my computer listing ALL the surnames that I'm researching. I also have an additional card listing the names & locations of the people whom I encounter that are searching for people from the same area as myself. Then if I find myself at some obscure website or list of polish names, I will check to see if mine or anyone else's are listed. So I will add: For Shellie--- Ference/Rzeszow

MaryAnne,
Happy New Year! Thank you for the comments and for adding me to your list. I added the 2 other photos that I had (see the original posting). I don't know if it will help us - notice the little girl never stays still long enough to capture her face in the photos. Also, there is a toddler, you can barely see his head at the bottom of the photos.
If anyone has viewed church records for Rzeszow, please contact me. Also, if you know anyone named Ference from Rzeszow, please let me know.

Hi Shellie,
Happy New year to all on the forum!
I see the additional photos you posted and the only thing I see for sure is the little girl being the same. That head of hair and the cut are on the same girl. The new photo where we see the back & side of her head shows where the hair is cut with some ear showing and it matched the placement of the hair on the portriat photo.
I realized that I could enlarge those photos on this page and that helped a lot-but it is hard to tell if the soldier is the same in the portrait as the one outside the house. I almost still think it is more likely they are related rather than the same guy-but I'm not an expert. Wtih the enlargement, I was able to see the medals better, so that will be helpful for you in identifying them.
In general-this is a tough one!
sorry I can't be more helpful.
MaryAnne

Ahhhh it's so frustrating to have photos of my family and no one to tell me who they are! Thank you so much for looking at my photos with a fresh pair of eyes. By the way, is Duplaga a common Polish name? Any family in the Beaver County, PA area?

Hello,
Thank you for all this helpful information about Rzeszow. I know many of our ancestors would list the nearest town to where they came from (if it happened to be a village). I am lucky enough to have learned of my maternal grandparents home villages (I started separate topics for each in the hope of gleaning information from other contributors to this site, but, I then saw your specific topic on Rzeszow and decided to post here too).
My maternal grandfather, Tomasz J. Kopic (Kopec/Kopacz?) came from MALAWA, a village just east of Rzeszow.
My maternal grandmother, Agnieszka Filip, came from the village (not town) of CHMIELNIK, just southeast of Rzeszow.
I see there is a Kopec in your list, but no Filip.
I would welcome any historic/current input about these villages or this town, as well as anyone's connection to these surnames in that area. In the meanwhile, I will enjoy perusing the informational links you have provided here.
Also, I am interested in a third surname of WOZNIAK, hailing from the Malawa are too.
As I just joined, I feel like a kid in a candy store (so many 'aisles'-- of information-- to explore!), and would like to contribute where and when I can. I also share your love of looking at old photos (by the way speaking of old family photos-- this past summer, my area had lots of freak rainstorms over a short period-- and our basement suddenly flooded-- unbeknownst to me, some of the 'family albums' had been placed in an old dresser drawer--the wrong place at the wrong time, and we lost over 500 family photos-- some very, very old ones). The irony of this is, if they had been placed only one drawer up, they would have escaped the flood waters. I managed to salvage a couple hundred, but the moral of this unfortunate personal story is: "Keep your old photos in a safe (and dry) place"-never, never, never in the basement!

I believe the military gentleman in the photo chevron on the sleeve indicates his rank. Something close to sergeant.
The Cross metal would have his regimental number on it. If your photo is sharp enough it might assist you in identification.
I found a similar photo on the site listed below and it should explain the other two metals.

You might consider adding your photo to the thread and see if someone can give you some help.
I have family from near Rzeszow. The Fus family in Zolynia. I am also looking for Kopczyk's near Golcowa, Pow. Brzozow
