Post subject: Looking for Pokoje
Hi!
I have a relative named Xavier Widelski, who immigrated from Pokoje. Does anybody know where that is?
Thanks!
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
There are two places with that name. One is a village in Wielkopolskie and the other is part of a village in Mazowieckie.
Cf. attached map.
Wishing you success,
Dave

Thank you so so much, Dave! Were those villages around in the early 1900s when my relative may have emigrated? Or are they newer villages/towns?

Lisa,
The village you want is the first one in Wielkopolskie. Yes, it existed in 19th and 20th Centuries. The parish to which the village belonged is Cienin Kościelny. In case you’ve not seen Xavier’s marriage record he was married at Immaculate Conception (2944 E. 88th Street, Chicago, Illinois). Here is a link to the marriage record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-676S-WFX?i=154&cc=1452409 It is the second entry on page 277. His parents were Wawrzyn (Lawrence) Widelski and Izabela (Isabelle) Klichowska.
A very useful site for marriages in województwo wielkopolskie from 1800 to 1900 is the Poznan Project. Here is the link to the site: http://poznan-project.psnc.pl/
I did a quick search for his parents and they married in Cienin Kościelny in 1873. Wawrzyn’s parents were Bogusław/Bogumił and Konstancja Białkowska, who were married in Sławsk in 1844. The records from those parishes have been filmed and are on Family Search. Unfortunately, not all have been digitized at this time and thus not all are available online. During the 19th Century the territory was in Russian Poland aka The Kingdom of Poland (Królestwo Polskie) and record were kept in the long paragraph style in Polish until 1868 and from then until the end of WWI in Russian.
Attached are images of the Poznan Project indexes for the two marriages.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Good luck in your search.
Dave
