Post subject: Why is Ruchała a name?
That’s the entirety of my question really. I Googled it and was surprised.

Hi,
You shouldn't google surnames. Unfortunately, it makes no sense. Yes, the surname Ruchala when translated gives a strange translation. Surnames often come from names, objects, places, professions...

Hi Brian,
An excellent resource is "Polish Surnames: Origins & Meanings", 3rd edition by William F. Hoffman. On page 636, we find that a Polish surname beginning in Ruch- can come from an item (physical object) or from a verb root or action. Ruchała could come from the verb ruchać "to move, be in motion", or from ruch "movement" or from rucho "movement, clothing, skirt". These are the possibilities listed. Also, the number of Polish citizens who bore that surname in year 2002 is 1556 as listed in Hoffman's book.
Best of luck with your research.
Mike
